Over the years, new medical instruments have been designed to improve the quality of treatments. One such piece of equipment is the 3-way stopcock. By definition, it is a valve regulating liquid flow through a tube. Healthcare workers use it while administering IV liquids, injections, or other intravenous drugs.

How Does A 3-Way Stopcock Work?

In a 3-way stopcock, there are three ports. One is a male port for attaching I.V Cannula, while the other two are female ports that act as delivery lines. All three ports are equipped with Luer Locks to ensure leak-proof operation.

It also has a valve on top to control the opening and closing of the ports. Generally, the valve has three handles with arrows and one blank side. To close a port, rotate the valve so that the blank side coincides with the port. If you wish to have all three ports open, turn the valve so that the blank side is towards the direction where there are no ports.

Why Do You Need A 3-Way Stopcock?

Two primary instances where a 3-way stopcock can be a better choice than a 1-way or 2-way stopcock are given below.

Scenario 1

If a patient is in a critical condition, they may need two or more medications simultaneously. In such cases, you can use the 3-way cock to administer these fluids with a single I.V cannula. For example, some patients may need an intravenous injection while on saline. With the help of a 3-way stopcock, you can use one female port to attach the saline line and the other female port to deliver the injection.

Scenario 2

The medical staff often has to draw fluid from a cavity and pump it back to different delivery lines. In such cases, instead of disconnecting the syringe every time you need to empty it, you can use the 3-way stopcock. By rotating the valve, you can adjust the openings to draw the fluid from one port and deliver it back into another.

How Can A Dispoway 3-Way Stopcock Help In These Scenarios?

The Dispoway 3-way stopcock by HMD has significant improvements that help administer two or more liquids. These changes are:

  • As opposed to traditional stopcocks with only open and close options, it has steps to control the flow of each port
  • Manufactured using top-of-the-line materials to make it leak-proof.
  • Lipid resistance to avoid cracks when using volatile solutions.
  • Has a transparent flow channel to help you inspect the flow of the medication.

Final Thoughts

A 3-way stopcock is an integral part of any significant medical treatment. HMD’s Dispoway provides you with a high-quality and durable stopcock to uphold the medical integrity of your institution. Its highly-functional design elements are also a boon when delivering one or more liquids into a patient’s system.
