Know About Blood-Borne Infections with Dispojekt Safety Needle

Blood-borne pathogens are microorganisms in human blood that can potentially cause infectious disease in humans. These pathogens include – but are not restricted to – Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that can lead to AIDS. Injuries related to needle-sticks and other sharps may expose individuals to these blood-borne pathogens. Ways of eliminating or minimizing workers’ exposure to these infectious pathogens include the use of safe medical devices. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) strongly recommends the use of safety-engineered devices with Sharps Injury Prevention (SIP) feature for intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections in hospitals and healthcare settings. One such instrument is the Dispojekt Safety Needle manufactured by Hindustan Syringes & Medical Devices (HMD) Ltd.

Dispojekt Safety Needles

Dispojekt safety needles are equipped with a dedicated SIP shield which minimizes the risk of accidental needle-stick injuries. Following use, the health-worker must push back the hinge-based shield, using a single hand. The transparent shield ensures that the fingertips do not come in contact with the needle. An audible click sound indicates the needle cover is locked. The key features of Dispojekt safety needles are as follows:

  1. Easy to use and handle; does not require any change in injection technique
  2. Safety mechanism designed to be activated with single hand
  3. Sharp three-bevelled siliconized needle to minimize any pain or discomfort in patient
  4. Needle is siliconised to check gliding force
  5. Luer mount safety needle
  6. Colour-coded in accordance with ISO 6009 standards
  7. Available in 22G (Gauge), 23G and 24G
  8. Easily affordable, competitively priced

For more than six decades, HMD Ltd. has been supplying the global market with top-notch, affordably priced medical devices for the benefit of patients and medical personnel alike. The result of a technical collaboration with UK-based global licensing company Star Syringes, the Dipojekt SIP Safety Needle has been innovatively designed keeping in mind the well-being and safety of health workers.

Additional Tips to Ensure Safety

In addition to using the Dispojekt safety needle, healthcare workers could minimize their exposure to blood-borne, infection-causing pathogens with the help of the following tips:

  • Wear Latex gloves and gowns to protect the hands and skin from coming in contact with blood.
  • Put on face and eye shield to prevent blood from getting inside the mucous membranes through the eyes, mouth, or nose.
  • Use an appropriate disinfecting solution for cleaning and decontaminating infected surfaces.
  • Place all potentially hazardous and contaminated materials in puncture-resistant sharps disposal containers.
  • Vigorously wash hands and other affected body parts using soap and warm water after removing the personal protective equipment.

Surveys have shown that accidental needle-stick injuries (NSIs) in healthcare providers often occur during and after disposal. But with a needle shield that entirely encloses the needle and an SIP feature that remains activated throughout disposal, the Dipojekt SIP Safety Needle significantly brings down the risk of contracting blood-borne infections in medical workers. On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, let’s make sure to follow the safety measures and use safety devices to stay protected against deadly blood-borne diseases.
