Medical devise for children & young people.

Medical devices have revolutionised healthcare, with studies highlighting their significant impact on improving health outcomes. A medical device is defined as any instrument, apparatus, appliance, implant, software, material, or article manufactured for use by human beings for medical purposes. These essential tools in healthcare facilitate complex procedures, accurate diagnosis, and effective treatments.

Medical devices also play a major role in pediatric health care, supporting the diagnosis and treatment of various children’s conditions. Some devices are specifically designed for younger people, while others are borrowed or adapted from adult applications to meet the unique needs of younger patients. This blog post explores these medical devices and their importance in child health care.

What are Medical Devices for Children and Young People?

Medical devices for children and young people, also known as paediatric medical devices, are used to treat and diagnose conditions in individuals below the age of 21. The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) in the US categorises pediatric patients into the following groups:

  • Neonates: Refers to babies from birth up to the first 28 days of life.
  • Infants: Includes children from 29 days old up to 2 years of age.
  • Children: This category includes individuals aged 2 to 12 years.
  • Adolescents: This group refers to individuals between the ages of 12 to 21.

Importance of Medical Devices for Children and Young People

Children and young people (CYP) require specialised medical devices designed for their bodies due to their different anatomical and physiological characteristics. Unlike adults, children and young adults are smaller in size, have different body structures, and exhibit different activity levels. For instance, baby veins are smaller and less supported by soft tissue than adult veins, making medical device design more crucial.

Additionally, many CYPs may require medical devices for long-term use, which can be challenging and raise concerns regarding the longevity of the device, prolonged exposure to implanted materials, and how they will adapt to growing bodies. Developing and manufacturing medical devices that address the specific needs of children and young people is crucial for accurate diagnosis, safe and effective treatment, and improved health outcomes.
