Sharps is a medical term used for devices with sharp edges that can puncture or lacerate skin. Sharps include not just needles, but syringes, lancets or surgical knives, Infusion sets, connection needles & sets, and auto injectors such as insulin pens. Although widely used, accidental injuries from these devices are the most common cause of transmission of blood-borne pathogens between patients and health care providers. These therefore, pose a significant risk to healthcare personnel, sewage workers, housekeepers, and anyone else handling these.
Disposal of Sharps
Used needles and other sharps are hazardous if not disposed of safely as these can injure people and cause serious infections. The most common infections are:
- Hepatitis B (HBV)
- Hepatitis C (HCV)
- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
Studies suggest that the risk of a recipient with no or partial immunity (either not fully vaccinated or a non-responder) to Hepatitis B infection is about 30%. For Hepatitis C, the risk is 3% and for HIV, it is 0.3%. Given these risks, it is critical to safely dispose of sharps instead of simply throwing them in household bins.
According to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, used needles and other sharps should be immediately placed in a sharps disposal box or container. A sharps disposal container is a specially designed box made of puncture-resistant plastic with water and leak-resistant sides and bottom, and a tight-fitting lid resistant to piercing or puncture.
