An Intravenous (I.V.) Cannula helps gain venous access for administration of fluids, medication, chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, and sampling of blood among others. It is typically inserted through the skin into a vein – preferably away from a joint – with the help of a fine needle. The needle is later removed, leaving only the small flexible tube i.e. the cannula in the vein. The I.V. Cannula is taped in place to prevent it from falling out. It should not hurt while it is in place and must be replaced routinely every 72 hours.
